Fort Aguada

Fort Aguada

The Aguada beach in North Goa is the place if you are looking for sun, surf and sand. Aguada differs from all other beaches in Goa for the bevy of historical attractions and forts it offers in addition to sun and the sand. The unspoiled beaches standing against the backdrop of centuries old citadels is a hot favourite among tourists, especially honeymooners. Thousands flock to experience the sun and the beauty of the citadels. It is home to the famous Aguada Fort

Currently being used as a jail, Fort Aguada has witnessed many battles and historical moments, some of which have had a direct impact on the health of the fort itself. The tower bell which survived centuries of weather and movements before being installed in the Church of Lady of Immaculate Conception, stands mute testimony to the impressive history of Fort Aguada.

Fort Aguada was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to protect Goa from the Dutch and the Marathas. Although small in comparison to the forts of Rajasthan, Aguada is a very well-preserved fort. The fort got its name from a spring which was used by crew of passing ships to replenish their stock of fresh water. Aguada means water. Just like the citadel, the Fort Aguada Lighthouse has stood witness to the passage of time. Built around 1864, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Asia. The lighthouse was in service for over 100 years when it was replaced by a more modern lighthouse. Visitors can enter the lighthouse and watch the panoramic view the lush green countryside and beautiful beaches.

CULTURE

Goa’s cultural traditions literally stretch back to the dawn of civilisation. Despite successive onslaughts and ravages of alien occupation, Goa’s cultural traditions have displayed amazing resilience. To a large extent, Goa’s cultural heritage was enriched by a slow but unremitting process of absorption and assimilation of the more congenial features of alien culture; the focal point being the symbiosis of Latin and local cultural strains. Freedom from colonial occupation brought about a cultural renaissance in Goa along with providing a fresh impetus to the classic literature and fine arts and a revival of the folk arts.
